Beware the Ides of March” has been the admonition to all men since the assassination of Julius Caesar on March 15, 44 B.C. But I, my Brothers, bring you glad tidings for this March - our First Annual Matinecock Masonic Historical Society Dinner/Dance scheduled for March 18th is in excellent shape! We have over 150 people attending (and still counting) and our journal is filling in nicely. We should have good news for the Historical Society when our finance committee reports.
Filling out our March calendar we have two Third Degree rehearsals and a drama review scheduled. On March 17 all are invited to wear green in support of (in in sympathy for) our Irish Brothers and you’ll be asked to share any facts or anecdotes on Irish Masonry you can dig up.
The Winter Olympics will be over by the time you read this but the spirit of international respect and cooperation will continue thanks to the example set by these athletes.
Masons, also, have had an influence on the international scene and here’s a list of some of them:
1. Alexander I, Czar of Russia
2. Christian VII, IX, X, Kings Denmark
3. Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England
4. Benjamin Disraeli, Prime Minister of Great Britain
5. Frederick the Great, King of Prussia
6. Giuseppe Garibaldi, Liberator of Italy
7. Benito Pablo Juarez, President of Mexico
8. King David Kalakana, King of Hawaii
9. Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France
10. Peter the Great, emperor of Russia
11. Adolph Fredrik, King of Sweden
12. Eloy Alfaro, President of Ecuador
13. Edward Benes, President of Czechoslovakia
14. Antonio Blanco, President of Venezuela
As we study for the Sublime Degree of Master Mason it is important to reflect on its meaning. “Sublime” means of high spiritual, moral, or intellectual worth.
The Degree searches deeply into a man’s heart. It is symbolical of the wisdom of age where we reflect on a life well spent and look forward to a glorious immortality.
The Sublime Degree teaches that The Word of the Great Architect may be found in another life - that is why it is the Sublime Degree. Read up on it Brothers, ask questions, and welcome our new Master Masons.
