.....anticipating the Great Blizzard of '09 (as the journalists "hype" it,) I'm thankful that we had the opportunity to get together at the Azmitia Estate for our annual Cuban "Pig Roast", courtesy of Worshipful Efrain and his charming wife, Pat. We raised over $1300 which will help to cover the Lodges expenses ahead. The food was excellent, the wine was inspirational, and the company was exceptional.
Brother Norman Youngs Jr. surprised us with a presentation to the Lodge on behalf of his family. He unveiled a framed original of The Philadelphia North American Newspaper, dated Thursday, October 15, 1912, headlining the attempted assassination of President Theodore Roosevelt as he prepared to give a speech in Milwaukee. With the bullet still in his body he delivered the speech to a packed house of over 10,000 people and then proceeded to the hospital! Thanks a million Right Worshipful Norman, Brother Norman Jr., and the rest of your family, we'll treasure your gift and display it in a place of prominence in the museum.
2010 is now upon us and it promises to be one of the most eventful years in recent history, both from a national and a Masonic point of view. The Copenhagen Conference on Global Warming has concluded with international agreements and I've just heard that the President's health care reform bill is about to be signed.
Masonicly we're looking at a visit from our A.G.L. The V.·.W.·.Luis D. Morales in January, two second degrees in February, The Second Nassau Grand Lecturers Convention in March, the First Annual Matinecock Historical Society Dinner/Dance on March 18th, and Third Degrees in April. I say "Degrees" because we've decided to limit each Degree presentation to five Brothers which will make it extremely difficult for the ritual participants and necessitate backups for many parts-stay current my Brothers and be prepared to be called.
One last reminder - we have to get those journal pages in. We've just about covered our expenses; the rest will "chip away" at that mortgage!
Closing on a current note I assume everyone has heard that the Shinnecocks have been recognized as a legitimate Indian tribe. Our late Right Worshipful Dick Kaiser informed me shortly before he died that several Native Americans were Masons:
Joseph Brant Mohawk Chief 1742-1807 Chief Crazy Bull Red Jacket Seneca Chief John Ross Cherokee Chief Shabonee Potawaromi Chief John Wautuhquant Mohegan Chief Tecumseh Shawnee Chief
It just goes to show, Brothers, you never know where you'll meet a Mason !
